ASME OM-2 – Component Testing Requirements at Nuclear Facilities
Overview of Inservice Testing (IST)
Inservice testing (IST) is utilized at nuclear facilities to test, examine, and monitor pumps, valves, and dynamic restraint devices. The primary purpose of IST is to ensure the operational readiness of these components to perform their specified functions. By trending degradation, IST enables early detection and remediation before components become incapable of fulfilling their roles.
Role of ASME OM and ASME OM-2
ASME OM, the “Operation and Maintenance of Nuclear Power Plants,” provides performance requirements for IST in water-cooled nuclear power plants, specifically light water reactors (LWRs). ASME OM-2, on the other hand, is a specialized component code intended for IST at nuclear facilities of varying designs. Both codes aim to ensure that pumps, valves, and dynamic restraint devices remain operational by detecting and addressing degradation.
Specific Considerations for ASME OM
ASME OM includes accommodations for testing components in existing nuclear power plants, recognizing that many components cannot be fully tested while the plant is online. This is partly due to ASME OM being developed after many LWR plants were already constructed and operational. The code was specifically tailored to meet the needs of LWR facilities, considering their unique operational conditions.
Evolution to ASME OM-2
With the nuclear industry expanding to new and advanced reactor designs, ASME identified the need for a code tailored to these innovative facilities. ASME OM-2 was created to address IST requirements for components in these new reactor designs. This code emphasizes that components included in the IST program must:
- Be appropriate for their intended functions.
- Be correctly sized and specified for the system parameters.
- Be constructed of materials compatible with system fluid conditions, pressures, temperatures, and chemistry.
ASME OM-2 ensures that the testing of components in advanced reactors is robust, accommodating the unique requirements of these next-generation facilities.
